The “Just this time” option changes Catalogs Settings > General > Back up catalog to “Never”. IMO, it’s a pretty stupid option to have on the Exit screen. It should be named “Just this time and never, ever again”. To have the option to backup your catalog at will, select “Every time Lightroom exits” from the Back up catalog choices, and click the Skip this time button when you don’t want to back up.

Hi Peter, Yes, if you completely lost a catalog but had been writing to XMP you could create a new catalog and then import all photos (use Add) to start over. In addition to collection membership, you would also lose flags, virtual copies, and individual history steps for each photo.

my Lightroom does create XMP sidecar files. My Theory is, that a corrupt database can be rebuild with these xmp files. Not sure if this theory is true, I did not test it yet. The onliest downside is that collections are not stored in the xmp files.
