I’ve been to many of your seminars but still don’t know when you and Matt and many others say, backing up your catalog is not backing up photos. I’m proficient in LR editing. I do a back up once a week of catalog, but what about the photos, could you please share with me …how do I do that? No one ever explains that.. Matt, Tim Grey, no one.I’m very nervous with 86K+ photos! Thanks for your help. Was at the 20th anniversary of PS SF and you played great music!Cheers, and many thanks and well wishes for a great 2019! Barbara

Not only for those that use other software like photomechanic but in the case that your if you do lose your catalog and back up you still have your edits and xmp files don’t dost much in the world of diskspace.

1. The default location is in the same folder where your catalog resides. Yes, you can change it, but a lot of people don’t.

2. Time Machine is fine, but by running Lightroom’s backups you get the benefit of the integrity check that can catch a small problem before it becomes a big problem. Having Time Machine continue to backup a series of catalogs with problems will make it harder to recover should that problem get worse. Lightroom’s catalog backup is automated, free, and can save your bacon. I use it on my Mac and Windows machines.

2) On a Mac don’t waste time and disk space with Lightroom backups, Time Machine does the job very well

I rely on my Time Machine backup as well. I also use Backblaze for online backups. I don’t see a need to clutter up the drive with Lightroom backups, too.
