Worth-a-click https://lightroomkillertips.com/worth-a-click-8/ https://lightroomkillertips.com/worth-a-click-8/#comments Wed, 24 Feb 2010 13:56:44 +0000 http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/?p=2045 Here’s a few things worth checking out as you surf around the web today. First a couple of “me” things: • I just turned my new portfolio website live over at MattKloskowski.com. • A good friend of NAPP (Firgs) has an interview with me posted on her website (lots of other NAPP interviews as well). • Finally, in other “me” news, I’ve been asked quite a bit about my twittering. So here’s the deal: I’m not much of a “here’s what I’m doing” twitterer. Honestly, I turn off my email and web browser most of the day so I can just get work done. However, I realize that twitter does have it’s place. So, for me, I’m using it to just let people know what content I produce. I have something new just about every day (Photoshop User TV, DTown TV, PS Killer Tips, etc…). So that’s what I twitter about. If you want to keep up with it you can follow me here. Thanks 🙂 Enough about me already! • Fellow Lightroom Guru and Wedding Pro, David Ziser has a Free webinar coming up on March 3. It’s all geared around his new book “Captured By the Light” (awesome book by the way). • Jeff Revell (of PhotoWalkPro fame and avid tree shooter) released his own Lightroom Holga Preset. You can read more about it here. • Sean McCormack has a cool video tip on fixing a weak catchlight in Lightroom. • Makers of my favorite lens bag, Boda, have just released a new version of their bag – the Boda V3. • One more thing. I’m teaching at Photoshop World in March. If you’re thinking of going, the early bird special to save $100 ends this weekend so sign up soon if you’re going. Also, check out the new Photoshop World iPhone app and review by the BestAppSite.com. Have a great Wednesday!

Tip – Quickly Changing Folders in Develop https://lightroomkillertips.com/1449/ https://lightroomkillertips.com/1449/#comments Fri, 29 May 2009 15:10:44 +0000 http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/?p=1449 Happy Friday everyone. Here’s a quick tip. If you’re developing your photos and you want to quickly switch to another folder or collection, I’ve seen a lot of people go back to the Library module to select it. They then click the folder or collection, then find the photo, then go back into the Develop module. That’s a huge pain, right? Well, below the toolbar but above the Filmstrip (at the bottom) is a small filter area. In this area is a path that shows you what folder and photos you’re looking at. Next to it, on the right, is a small down-facing arrow. If you click on it you’ll see a list of recent folders and collections that you’ve viewed. Click here to see a graphic of what I’m talking about. Then just choose the folder or collection you want to jump to and Lightroom will take you there without leaving the Develop module. Pretty nifty huh? Well, I hope you have a great weekend. My wife is at an out-of-town wedding this weekend so I’m Mr. Mom for 3 days. I hope my kids are ready for delivery pizza, microwaved chicken nuggets, and ice cream all weekend cause that’s about the best I can do 🙂 See ya!

Weekly Update – Contest, HDR, and Inspiration https://lightroomkillertips.com/weekly-update-and-adjustment-brush-tip/ https://lightroomkillertips.com/weekly-update-and-adjustment-brush-tip/#comments Mon, 13 Oct 2008 13:21:42 +0000 http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/?p=888 Hi everyone! I wanted to start the week by tying up a few loose ends from last week. So here goes: 1) First off, the contest. I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who watched the video. Apparently you guys like these casual videos so hopefully we’ll be able to get more of them up. Now… the moment you’ve all been waiting for… the winner of the book IS…… Chris Kocher from www.ccphotostories.com. Thanks to everyone for participating. 2) Our HDR crusade from earlier this week was indeed heard. I heard from the folks over at HDRsoft this morning and they did read all of your comments. It seemed very well received but it was difficult for them to give me a definite answer. From what I can gather, they’re very far along the development process of the 3.1 version of the product. I can totally relate to that. Having been in the software business some years ago, we always had to put a “enough is enough” final date on adding new things to the software. I hadn’t realized they were so far into the development cycle for version 3.1, but they are. They also let me know that it is definitely something that is well on their radar and thanked all of the contributors here for making them aware of this feature’s importance. So, here’s my take is this. When version 3.1 ships you’ll either, a) See a blog post from me celebrating the automatic re-import of the HDR processed file or most likely, b) See a video from me having to explain the process of re-importing the processed HDR file once you’re done with Photomatix and getting it into the same folder, etc. Hey… I can’t complain – it’s job security right? 🙂 3) Start your week off with some inspiration. First, check out Red Leaf Studios photography. Mostly wedding and portrait stuff but I’m really digging the use of natural light. Also, I’m heading off to Bar Harbor, Maine on Wednesday this week to teach my GAPW workshop. As I always do, I did some research on places to shoot and came across this photography portfolio by Greg Hartford. There’s some very nice stuff and if you look closely enough, I’m pretty sure there’s a decent amount of HDR processing going on (subtle though, not the surreal sci-fi effect). That’s it for Monday. I’ll talk you again later this week.

Weekly Odds and Ends https://lightroomkillertips.com/weekly-odds-and-ends/ https://lightroomkillertips.com/weekly-odds-and-ends/#comments Thu, 10 Jul 2008 05:00:51 +0000 http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/?p=681 Welcome to your quick dose of tidbits, news, and info for the week: • First up, here’s a neat interview with Phil Clevenger, the Lightroom interface designer. It’s about 12 minutes long and definitely worth watching to get an idea of what went on behind the interface design of Lightroom and where it may be heading. • Next, I’ll be teaching Lightroom at Photoshop World in Las Vegas September 2-4. If you can make it, I think you’ll find there’s something for just about everyone there and you’ll be learning from the best-of-the-best in the industry. Also, I’ve got a related contest coming tomorrow so stay tuned for that. But most importantly, if you’ve been thinking about going now is the time to pull the trigger. There’s two weeks left in the early bird registration (ends on August 1st) which means you’ll save $100. Trust me, there’s no strings attached this one. It’s simple – August 1 Cost: $499, August 2 Cost: $599. • I’ve mentioned that I’m really into architectural photography and interior lighting. Well I’m extremely psyched that one of the photographers I’ve mentioned here on the blog (Thomas Grubba) is hosting a workshop with Scott Hargis in August. These two guys are some of the best in the industry. Here’s the link for more info and I’m pretty sure I’ll be making the trip. What hooked me was the 2 staged/furnished 3400 sq. ft. photo shoots that we’ll actually be shooting. I know these guys would put on one heck of a classroom workshop but getting to shoot with them definitely takes this workshop to the “I must go” level. There’s only room for 20 so that everyone gets individual attention. I’ll be going with a friend of mine, which means there’s only 18 spots left – so you’d better sign up soon. • Andy Taylor over at Tech Talk Radio interviewed me last week about photography, Photoshop, and Photoshop World. The show actually airs on Sundays but you can listen to the recorded show here. Thanks Andy! • Finally, some inspiration for the day. Check out K&K Photography. They’re wedding and portrait photographers but even if you don’t shoot weddings I think you can learn a lot about photographing people from looking at great wedding photographer’s portfolios. They’ve also got a blog which a lot of photographers have been doing lately. Great stuff! Whew! That’s it for today. I’ll be back tomorrow with a tip as well as some info on the Photoshop World contest I’ve got lined up. See ya.

Wed. Inspiration – Architectural Photography https://lightroomkillertips.com/wednesday-inspiration-architectural-photography/ https://lightroomkillertips.com/wednesday-inspiration-architectural-photography/#comments Thu, 27 Mar 2008 03:33:48 +0000 http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/2008/wednesday-inspiration-architectural-photography/ I’ve been studying Architectural photography a lot lately and I’ve come across some really great websites. Thomas Grubba photography is one of them. He’s got a great portfolio of both interior and exterior photos. Plus, I really liked his Kitchen section as I’m a sucker for a really well designed kitchen (not that I cook) 🙂 As I looked through his site it made me want to do two things: 1) I kept trying to dissect the lighting. Most architectural photography is a mixture of available light and some type of continuous or strobe lighting and I like to see if I can tell which is being used where. 2) It made me want a new house. Don’t get me wrong, I love my house but some of these places are absolutely gorgeous. Next, one of the leaders in real estate photography, Scott Hargis, has a great portfolio as well. He’s got some beautiful exterior and interior stuff. Plus, if you’re interested in this type of work I dug up an interview with him that I thought was a great read. Here’s the link. Finally, here’s a link to Randy Van Duinen photography. Randy’s been a friend of mine for a few years and he’s just got an awesome portfolio (as well as being a really nice guy). Randy helps out at Photoshop World and I see his photos every time I’m there and I always have the same response – “I’m following you next time we go out on a photo shoot!”. Seriously, he’s very talented and I’m hoping to accompany him on some projects in the coming months to see what tips I can pull from him when it comes to architectural photography. All in all, I think this type of work is great and I’ve been exploring it more and more lately. I actually have a few shoots set up in the Tampa area so I’ll keep you posted. Enjoy!

It got me searching around for other photographers and websites and I came across Jeff Kauck Photography. Jeff is a food and still life photographer and he’s been in every magazine, cookbook, or package you can think of over the last 20 years. He takes food photography to a whole new level and if you’re looking for a change of pace for inspiration this is it. You can visit his site and portfolio over at www.jeffkauckphotographyadvertising.com. Enjoy! (photo credit: Jeff Kauck)

News, Discounts, and some Inspiration https://lightroomkillertips.com/news-discounts-and-some-inspiration/ https://lightroomkillertips.com/news-discounts-and-some-inspiration/#comments Thu, 28 Feb 2008 15:33:30 +0000 http://www.lightroomkillertips.com/2008/news-discounts-and-some-inspiration/ Happy Friday everyone! Yep, I know it’s not Friday for most of you but it is for me so I’m posting some extra stuff today since I’ll be off tomorrow. First off, Jeff Revell of the Photo Walk Pro blog did a review of my Layers book. Make sure you poke around the site for a while when you stop by – lots of good stuff (I mean in addition to the review 🙂 ). Oh yeah, don’t forget I’m still signing copies for anyone who orders the book from Kelby Training’s website. So go ahead and participate in the “Make Matt’s Hand Hurt” campaign. (fyi… I’ve gotten lots of comments here on the blog from people who’ve already gotten the book but please keep ’em coming. I love that stuff!). Next up, I want to let you know about a really cool discount. I know a lot of people that visit this site are NAPP members (and some of you are probably thinking about becoming one). Here’s a discount, that pertains to all photographers, that I just found out about but you’re going to have to act quickly. You may have heard about Nik Software’s Viveza, a new Photoshop plug-in. It’s really hard to explain what it does but it uses this “thing” called U Point Technology. Before you fall asleep from technical terms like that, you’ve got to see it in action. They’ve got a really quick 2 minute video that explains what this stuff is and I’ve got to say it’s really sweet. That’s not the news though. The news is that NAPP members (for 2 weeks only) are going to be able to save $50 off of the software. So if you’re a NAPP member you’ll have paid for half your membership right there. If you’re going to join, again, that takes care of half your membership right off the bat. Finally, this news is actually so new that the web pages aren’t set up yet. They will be early next week and I’ll make sure to post the link as soon as it happens. I wanted to let you know about it right away though, so you don’t go out and buy it this weekend if you were thinking about it. Next up is some web gallery goodness. – Sean McCormack has some new free galleries for Lightroom and you can find them here. – The Turning Gate has a really cool Client Response web gallery. It let’s clients rate images with comments. Neat stuff! Here’s the link. Finally, I’ll leave you with some inspirational photography. Take a look at Gregory Heisler’s portfolio. He concentrates on portraits and photographs mainly celebrities (the Quiet section was my favorite). However, knowing that neither you or I will likely be photographing the people he does, I always approach viewing galleries like this from another point – style, setting, expression, lighting and other factors aside from the celebrity. That way, I can start to get some ideas for my own work. Well friends, that brings the week to a close for me. I’m taking Friday off from everything related to work (at least that’s the plan) and relaxing a bit. Of course the mayhem of little league/soccer games and kids birthday parties starts up on Saturday (you know, the usual weekend stuff) so it will be short lived. I wouldn’t trade it for the world though 🙂 Have a great weekend! (photo credit: Gregory Heisler)

Happy Friday everyone!
